Back in the stone ages when I was a kid, mom often made sloppy joes. Let me tell you, I still remember how good they were. Yummy soft roll…filled with mom’s special sloppy joe recipe: no green stuff…no red stuff…no chunks…a little sweet, a little savory, a LOT good and super messy. What’s not to really love there?? Well I’ve tailored mom’s recipe a little, I took it from beef (which back then was a whole lot healthier than the standard grocery store beef these days) to the super healthy and really tasty venison. Try this on your kids (of any age!).
Brown and drain 1 lb. venison.
Mix together and add to the venison:
1/4 c. ketchup 1/2 c. (1 small can) tomato paste
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 T. red wine vinegar
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/4 c. brown sugar – packed
1/4 tsp. chili powder
Simmer 30-45 minutes until sauce is very thick. OR put it in a slow cooker for as much as three hours. I do this often on busy afternoons — it’s nice to come in to a great smelling kitchen with dinner ready to go!
